Lumber Volume Explained: What is a Board Foot?
In the North American lumber and hardwood timber industry, rough-sawn and surfaced lumber is standardized and traded using the Board Foot (abbreviated bd ft or BF, with MBF indicating 1,000 board feet). One board foot is defined as the volume of a nominal piece of wood measuring 1 foot long by 1 foot wide by 1 inch thick:
1 Board Foot = 12 in × 12 in × 1 in = 144 in³ = 1/12 ft³ ≈ 0.083333 ft³
- Board Foot Formula:
Board Feet = (Thickness in inches × Width in inches × Length in feet) ÷ 12or(Thickness in inches × Width in inches × Length in inches) ÷ 144. - Cubic Foot (ft³): Equal to 12 board feet (
