What is Linear Current Density?

Linear Current Density (also termed surface current density or sheet current density, designated by vector symbol K, Jₛ, or α) quantifies the amount of electric current flowing per unit transverse width along a two-dimensional conducting sheet, plate, or interface:

K = I ÷ w

  • K: Linear current density in amperes per meter (A/m) or amperes per centimeter (A/cm).
  • I: Total electric current conducted (amperes, A).
  • w: Width of the conducting surface perpendicular to the flow of current (meters, m, or centimeters, cm).

When current flows through a thin planar sheet of uniform volumetric current density J (A/m²) and physical thickness t (meters), linear current density is expressed directly as:

K = J × t

Electromagnetic Boundary Conditions & Ampère’s Law

In classical electrodynamics derived from Maxwell’s equations, a surface current sheet produces a discontinuous jump in the tangential magnetic field intensity H across the interface between two regions:

n̂ × (H₁ - H₂) = K
