Convert megabytes (MB) to gigabytes (GB) with the unit system that matches your file or storage label. The calculator starts in standard decimal SI units. Switch to binary IEC mode when your input is a mebibyte value (MiB); the selected unit names update with the calculation.

MB and GB versus MiB and GiB

In decimal SI units, 1 MB = 1,000,000 bytes and 1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes, so 1 GB contains 1,000 MB. Binary computer-size units use different names: 1 MiB = 1,048,576 bytes and 1 GiB = 1,073,741,824 bytes, so 1 GiB contains 1,024 MiB.

Searches often write “MB to GB” when the intended calculation uses 1,024. This page shows both answers without labeling binary units as MB or GB. Choose Decimal SI for MB and GB, or Binary IEC for MiB and GiB.

MB to GB formulas

Decimal: GB = MB ÷ 1,000.
Binary: GiB = MiB ÷ 1,024.

The byte definitions give these ratios directly: 1,000,000,000 ÷ 1,000,000 = 1,000, and 1,073,741,824 ÷ 1,048,576 = 1,024.

Common MB to GB examples

For each row, the decimal result treats the input as MB; the binary result treats the same number as MiB.

Input value Decimal MB to GB Binary MiB to GiB
512 512 MB = 0.512 GB 512 MiB = 0.5 GiB
1,024 1,024 MB = 1.024 GB 1,024 MiB = 1 GiB
2,048 2,048 MB = 2.048 GB 2,048 MiB = 2 GiB
4,096 4,096 MB = 4.096 GB 4,096 MiB = 4 GiB
5,120 5,120 MB = 5.12 GB 5,120 MiB = 5 GiB
8,192 8,192 MB = 8.192 GB 8,192 MiB = 8 GiB
10,240 10,240 MB = 10.24 GB 10,240 MiB = 10 GiB

How to use the calculator

  1. Enter the value to convert.
  2. Select Decimal SI for MB/GB, or Binary IEC for MiB/GiB.
  3. Check the From and To menus; their labels match the selected unit system.
  4. Read the result, which also shows the output unit.

Frequently asked questions

What is 10,240 MB in GB?

Using decimal SI units, 10,240 MB = 10.24 GB. If the value is actually binary, enter 10,240 MiB in Binary IEC mode; the result is 10 GiB.

Is 1 GB 1,000 MB or 1,024 MB?

By SI definitions, 1 GB = 1,000 MB. The binary relationship is 1 GiB = 1,024 MiB. Some software informally calls GiB and MiB “GB” and “MB,” which is why a displayed value can differ.

Can I convert other storage units here?

Yes. The From and To menus include bytes, kilobytes, terabytes, and bit units. Their labels and conversion factors follow the selected decimal or binary mode.
